On one locality in the vicinity of Zaječar, at the sea level of 200-220 m, NE exposition, on erroded brown soil, development of the following 11-year old coniferous plantations was studied: Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), Caucasian fir (Abies nordmanniana), eastern wrote pine (Pinus strobus), spruce (Picea abies) and Austrian pine (Pinus nigra). The greatest seedling survival was in spruce (82%), and the smallest one in Douglas-fir (63%). The total heights as well as well as annual height increments were the best in eastern white pine, followed by spruce, Douglas-fir, Austrian pine and at last Caucasian fir. According to the data in literature, growth of all studied species was much smaller than the growth of the same species on other localities. That means that on a site with relatively suitable conditions (mild slope, deep soil), these species have not realized completely ther genetically conditioned growth potential.
