Sequoias (Sequoiadendron giganteum B u c h h. and Sequoia sempervirens En dl.) were introduced m S. R of Serbia in 1954. yr. Till 1970 yr. 600 plants of giant sequoia were produced and planted everywhere in Serbia, as solitary trees or in small groups. The giant sequoia was introduced in picnic forests in the vicinity of Belgrade on the mountain of Avala. Šuplja Stena, Crveni Breg, Trešnja, mountain of Kosmaj. It was also planted on some other mountains of Serbia: Bukulja, Ozren, Zlatibor, Tara and Jastrebac, up to the see level of 1000 m, on oak and beech sites. In all these places this species has shown good growth. depending on site conditions. It survives on low temperatures up to -29°C, although the frost damages can be noticed on the crown parts and individual branches. The techniques of generative and autovegetative propagation were overcome. An attempt of growing coastal sequoia (Sequoia sempervirens) was also made, but without success: only a specimen has remained on the site of Quercetum Farenetto-cerris serb. R u d.. in the dendrological collection of the arboretum ,,Šuplja Stena".
