On a sample of 30 Scotch pine (Pinus silvestris L.) trees·, 10-year old planted as two-year seedlings, annual height growth was measured, in order to check the possibilty of early , selection and corresponding tending measures in young stands. The following data were obtained: The annual height growth of such young plants was highly variable from year to year. In one year it might be smaller in some plants, while in the next year it might be bigger in the same plants, oscilating in that way from its own trend line and from trend of all plants in the group. The analysis of a few trees, which total height was one and two standard deviations higher than the mean height of all trees in the group, points out the uncertainty of selection of trees of that age. That means also that early thinings some good genotypes might be eliminated. To this problem much more attention should i be paid in the future, in order to be able to determine the most representativei age for individual selection and tending opperations of young stands.
