The question of heroism at the beginning of the twenty-first century can be viewed in relation to the perception of it from the beginning of the previous century. In his famous study On Heroes, T. Carlyle wrote that great men are an emanation of light, “innate, original intelligence, manliness and heroic nobility”, classifying their relation- ship with other people as divine relationships (Carlyle 1903: 2). Nowadays, this image is changing significantly, denying it the position of divine or heroism, history, theology and mythology, moving it into the narrative itself: “To be a hero is a matter of poetry. The point of the story. Stories that sing” (Jevremović 2013: 98). The paper examines the issue of heroism in Grigorije Božović’s short stories in the context of the epic, regardless of national or religious commitment: the killing and the choice of the weapon itself in contextualizing the image of the hero (heroism that is inseparable from both the weapon and the opponent: a gun or a sword, versus a club; a Turk versus a club gypsy). Božović gives a picture of the suffering of the Serbs in the last years of the Turkish rule, the brutality of the Albanians and the tendency of ethnic cleansing of the Serbian population in Kosovo and Metohija. However, not all characters in his stories who fall under the category of “Others” (Albanians, Turks, Bulgarians, etc.) are devoid of qualities such as courage, humanity, fairness. Božović’s aesthetics are inseparable from ethics. Ethics, from which the national worker speaks and cries, but also the theology of the Moscow Spiritual Academy.

Актуализујући дело Григорија Божовића, писца којег након неправедно идеолошки анатемисаног периода књижевна критика поново сврстава у корпус свог интересовања, рад ће анализирати појам „витешког тренутка“ у неколиким његовим приповеткама. Њихов „епски миље“ један је од чинилаца мотивације јунака, у облику у ком неприја- тељство између Срба, Турака и Арнаута, осим политичких и историјских прилика, има и архетипске димензије. Непријатељ се не доживљава као појединац, већ као „колективно биће друге нације“. Отуда се овај рад неће бавити само проблемом националног идентитета Срба с краја 19. и почетком 20. века и Божовићевим литерарним ангажманом у јачању народног духа и растеривању дефетизма, него ће разматрати питање јунаштва у контексту епског, без обзира на национално или верско опредељење: убиство и бирање самог оружја у контекстуализовању слике јунака (јунаштво које је неодвојиво и од оружја и од противника: пушка или мач, насупрот батини; Турчин насупрот Циганину).
