This paper departs from the premise that every consideration of the relationship between literature and the future necessarily entails a critical view of history. On the applied level, by accepting time as a “fundamental category of thought”, Nečista krv (Impure Blood) can be read as a metaphor of impure conscience, approached with an awareness of Stanković’s historical orientation toward the tragic Serbian family and society-not only through the prism of the tragic beauty of the female figure.The problem of the connection between literature and the future reveals both the uniqueness and significance of Nečista krv and explains its place among the foremost Serbian novels. At the same time, this perspective shows why the novel, in its sharpened form, remains open to questions of history and identity in ways that are still relevant today. Stanković presents an apocalyptic vision of ruined characters: the wounded female soul (Sofka and others), and the untamed destructive forces of men-pleasure seekers, drunkards, unfaithful husbands, fathers, and sons (Karaola, Hadži Trifun, Efendi Mita, Gazda Marko, Tomča, among others). Through the reproduction of impure blood, they leave behind degenerate offspring with no future. The analysis concludes with a paradoxical insight: the only path to freedom, and therefore to the future, lies in art and knowledge. Although humiliated and lost, Sofka ends in ashes, yet the world of Stanković’s characters points toward freedom as the ultimate horizon

У теоријској равни рад полази од идеје да свако разматрање про- блема везе и односа књижевности и будућности увек подразумева критички поглед на историју. Конфуције је, промишљајући о времену, веровао да се бу- дућност може предсказати на основу познавања прошлости. У том смислу указујемо на филозофско, друштвено и психолошко разумевање времена. У примењеној равни, прихватајући категорију времена као „темељну мисао- ну категорију“, Нечистој крви као нечистој савести приступамо тако што имамо на уму пишчеву историјску окренутост српској трагичној породици и друштву, и то не само кроз призму трагичне лепоте женског бића. Као резултанта теоријског и примењеног сагледавања теме јесте налаз да Станковићев роман јасно афирмише схватање да историја представља аре- ну смисленог људског делања и пут који води испуњењу. Нажалост, ниједан од његових јунака не успева у свом отпору последицама нечисте крви и не- чисте савести.
