Abstract: Man is a social being, and life in society, in addition to respecting social rules, also implies constant communication with other members of society. The ways of communication, its forms and manifestations have always occupied the attention of intelligent people, philosophers, writers and lawyers. Rhetoric, in the sense of science, but also as a set of rules for beautiful speech and expression, originates from ancient times. In the ancient world, rhetoric, in addition to grammar and dialectics, formed the basis of education. Before rhetoric, oratory, the art of beautiful speech, arose, and rhetoric, in the sense of a set of rules for public speaking, developed only later. The twenty-first century is a century of technological progress that is also reflected in numerous forms of communication. However, the elementary forms of knowledge transfer and the development of the teaching process at higher education institutions have essentially not changed much for centuries. The scope of knowledge transferred during the teaching process depends to a significant extent on the eloquence of the teaching staff and their oratorical skills to transfer knowledge and skills to others by using adequate oratory skills. On the other hand, some higher education institutions insist on rhetoric as an integral part of the educational process that will prepare students for the period after their studies when they enter practice and their oratory skills become a powerful tool in their everyday work. The aim of this paper is to use analytical and comparative methods to present the historical development of rhetoric, its presence and importance in the teaching process at certain higher education institutions in the Republic of Serbia, and to point out the importance of greater representation of rhetoric in study programs for the sake of better oratory and eloquence of current students, future academic citizens.

Kratak sadržaj: Čovek se društveno biće, a život u društvu, osim poštovanja društvenih pravila, podrazumeva i konstantnu komunikaciju sa drugim pripadnicima društva. Načini komunikacije, njeni oblici i manifestacija oduvek su okupirali pažnju umnih ljudi, filozofa, književnika i pravnika. Retorika, u smislu nauke, ali i kao skup pravila o lepom govoru i izražavanju, potiče iz davnih vremena. U antičkom svetu retorika je pored gramatike i dijalektike činila osnov obrazovanja. Pre retorike nastalo je besedništvo, veština lepog govora, da bi se retorika, u smislu skupa pravila o govorništvu, razvila tek kasnije. Dvadeset i prvi vek je vek tehnološkog napretka koji se odražava i na brojne vidove komunikacije. Međutim, elementarni vidovi prenošenja znanja i odvijanja nastavnog procesa na visokoškolskim ustanovama, u suštini se vekovima nisu mnogo promenili. Obim prenetog znanja tokom nastavnog procesa u značajnoj meri zavisi od elokvencije nastavnog osoblja i njihovog govorničkog umeća da prenesu na druge znanja i veštine upotrebom adekvatnih oratorskih veština. Sa druge strane, na nekim visokoškolskim ustanova se insistira na retorici kao sastavnom delu obrazovnog procesa koji će studente da pripremi za period nakon studija kada stupe u praksu i njihove govorničke veštine im postanu moćan alat u svakodnevnom radu. Cilj ovog rada je da upotrebom analitičkog i komparativnog metoda prikaže istorijski razvoj retorike, njenu prisutnost i značaj u nastavnom procesu na pojedinim visokoškolskim ustanovama u Republici Srbiji i ukaže na značaj veće zastupljenosti retorike u studijskim programima zarad boljeg govorništva i elokventosti trenutnih studenata, budućih akademskih građana.
