This scholarly inquiry undertakes an examination of the enduring discourse surrounding tech- nological determinism and its profound influence on the trajectory of cultural change. Within this multifaceted discourse, the study places a central emphasis on the transformative potential of emerg- ing technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), and their implications for cultural evolution and the preservation of human identity. Furthermore, this analysis extends its purview to consider the ethical dimensions inherent in the deployment of AI and the critical role played by cultural diversity in the ethical assessment of these technologies. Drawing on seminal works within the field, the discussion grapples with the conceptualization of technological determinism, echoing the insights of scholars such as Winner and McLuhan. While proponents of technological determinism posit that emerging technologies, such as AI, act as agents of cultural transformation, their perspectives are juxtaposed against those who perceive a perilous erosion of cultural diversity. In this context, the study critically engages with Winner’s “Autonomous Technology” to elucidate the socio-political ramifications of technological determinism, underscoring the need for a balanced ethical assessment. Ethical consid- erations applied to AI occupy a prominent place in this discourse. Cognizant of the transformative power of AI, scholars such as Bostrom and Floridi have probed into the ethical dimensions of AI de- ployment. The study reflects on their findings, highlighting the imperative of ethical vigilance in the development and application of AI technologies. It contends that ethical assessments of AI must be inherently bound to the preservation and enhancement of cultural diversity, thereby ensuring the eq- uitable distribution of AI’s benefits. This analysis further delves into the existing digital divide and its intricate interplay with the ethical evaluation of AI. It acknowledges the sobering reality that unequal access to technology exacerbates social disparities. As articulated by DiMaggio and Hargittai, the digital divide reinforces existing inequities, underscoring the ethical imperative of addressing access disparities in the deployment of AI. In conclusion, this study advances a nuanced understanding of technological determinism’s role in cultural evolution and the pivotal importance of cultural diversity in the ethical evaluation of AI. It underscores the ethical duty to mitigate disparities in access to tech- nology, thereby ensuring a more equitable and culturally diverse future in the age of AI.

Ово рад се бави анализом трајног дискурса о технолошком детермини- зму и његовом дубоком утицају на процес културних промена. У оквиру мултидисципли- нарног дискурса, стављен је централни нагласак на променљиви трансформативни по- тенцијал нових технологија, посебно вештачке интелигенције (AI), и њихове последице на културну еволуцију и очување људског идентитета. Осим тога, ова анализа проширује разматрање на етичке димензије у примени (AI) и кључну улогу коју игра културна ра- зличитост у етичком сагледавању ових технологија. Ослањајући се кључне изворе у овој области, рад се бави концептуализацијом технолошког детерминизма, пратећи увиде научника попут Винера и Маклуена (Winner and McLuhan). Док заступници техноло- шког детерминизма тврде да нове технологије, попут (AI), делују као носиоци културне трансформације, супротстављене перспективе овде перципирају опасну ерозију култур- не разноликости. У овом контексту, студија критички анализира Винерову „Аутономну технологију“ да би разјаснила социо-политичке последице технолошког детерминизма, наглашавајући потребу за уравнотеженом етичком проценом. Свесни трансформатив- не моћи (AI), научници попут Бострома и Флоридија (Bostrom, Floridi) истраживали су етичке димензије њене примене. Рад разматра њихове резултате, наглашавајући импера- тив етичке будности у развоју и примени AI технологија. Они тврде да етичка сагледавања AI морају бити инхерентно везана за очување и унапређење културне разноликости, чиме се обезбеђује равномерна дистрибуција користи од AI. Рад такође истражује постоје- ћи дигитални јаз и његову сложену везу са етичком проценом AI и истиче отрежњујућу стварност да неједнак приступ технологији појачава друштвене разлике. Како су показали ДиМаџио и Харгитаи (DiMaggio, Hargittai), дигитални јаз појачава постојеће неједнако- сти, наглашавајући етички императив решавања диспаритета у приступу у примени AI. У закључку, овај рад се залаже за нијансирано разумевање улоге технолошког детерминизма у културној еволуцији и централне важности културне различитости у етичкој процени AI. Наглашава се етичка обавеза за ублажавањем разлика у приступу технологији, чиме се осигурава праведнија и културно разноврснија будућност у доба вештачке интелигенције.
