On the basis of the data taken on four experimental plots in Serbia and three in Bosnia and Hercegovina, it was concluded that the straightness of the stem, branchlessness of the stem and insertion angle of the branches (70-90°) are extremely variable characteristics, especially the last two. When compared, according to the proportion of trees with these characteristics, some populations differ significantly among them, these differences being in accordance with diameter structure. Each phenotypic characteristic is correlated with selected quantitative indicators of diameter structure, but the strongest link was found the realative variability of mean stem diameter in the stands. With the increase of this variability the number of straight trees decreases, as well as the number of the branchless stems, while the number of trees with the insertion angle of branches of 70-90" increases. In all cases correlation link was strong and very strong (r = -0,8017, r = -0,9582, r = 0,9101). Beside a strong correlation of these characteristics with the indicators of diameter structure of populations, there still remains enough space for selection, especially for stem straightness.
