On a humus-silicate soil, »ranker«, formed on serpentine bare land, belonging to the mountains Kopaonik (localities Orljak I and II) and Ljukten, afforestation with containerized plants was made in the spring of 1975, and in the fall of 1977. On the experimental plots in these plantations the analysis of plant development was made by measuring height and diameter growth, as well as root system development. Also soil and microbiological analyses were made in order to connect soil characteristics with the growth of the plantations. The obtained data show that the growth of the plantations was very good and correlated with micro-eco-pedological conditions. The analysis of the root system showed that on skeletal soils there were no differences in root development between seedlings with protected and bare roots. By both kinds of seedlings root development was mainly limited by soil skeletness. The formation of the main root was omitted and the root system grew horizontally, showing the tendency of secondary development of the main root.
