The monograph presents the basic concepts, aspects, goals and principles related to ethnobotany, the history of the origin of ethnobotany in the culture of ancient Egypt, China, India, ancient Greece, the Roman Empire, the Middle Ages, Arab countries, America, in the Age of Enlightenment, the modern age, and especially in our area. In the description of research methods and procedures in ethnobotany, the composition of the teams, research phases, and anthropological, botanical and linguistic methods are mentioned. An overview of the history of the use of medicinal plants is given, as well as a review of modern phytotherapy. The traditional use of autochthonous plants in the countries of Southeastern Europe and the Western Balkans is reviewed in detail, with particular reference to Serbia and the use of medicinal plants in ethnopharmacology, ethnomedicine and ethnoveterinary, as well as the use of folk names of plants, which together with the Latin name is an integral part of the botanical name of each plant. A detailed description of the use of aromatic plants, natural cosmetics, wild edible and herbal plants, the traditional use of plants for dyeing wool, fabrics and clothes, and woody species for firewood, building material and furniture production is given. In addition, the role of plants in traditional culture and folklore, weaving and embroidery is also described. Examples of inspiration from plants in folk literature are given. An overview of the traditional use of plants for religious occasions and magical purposes is presented. The importance of ethnobotany is multiple. It promotes awareness of the connection between biodiversity and cultural diversity and the mutual influence of plants and people. Contemporary ethnobotany is an interdisciplinary field which brings together scientists from botany, anthropology, ethnology, archaeology, geography, pharmacology, medicine, chemistry, linguistics, economics, landscape architecture, pharmacology and other fields and deals with a wide range of research questions, which are addressed in the monograph. Acknowlegments: The monograph was realized within the Project "Ethno-pharmacological study of the region of Southeastern Serbia" of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, as well as within the Agreement on the implementation and financing of scientific research work of scientific research organizations in 2024, financed by the Ministry of Science, Technological Development and Innovation of the Republic of Serbia (No. 451-03-66/2024-03/200027).

У монографији су приказани основни појмови, аспекти, циљеви и принципи везани за етноботанику, историјат настанка етноботанике у култури древног Египта, Кине, Индије, античке Грчке, Римског царства, средњег века, Арапских земаља, Америке, у добу просветитељства, савременом добу, а посебно на нашим просторима. У опису метода и поступака истраживања у етноботаници наведени су састави тимова, фазе истраживања, антрополошке, ботаничке и лингвистичке методе. Дат је преглед историје употребе лековитих биљака, као и осврт на савремену фитотерапију. Детаљно је сагледана традиционална употреба аутохтоних биљака у земљама југоисточне Европе и западног Балкана, са посебним освртом на Србију и коришћење лековитог биља у етнофармакологији, етномедицини и етноветерини, као и употреба народних назива биљака, што уз латински назив представља саставни део ботаничког имена сваке биљке. Дат је и детаљан приказ употребе ароматичних биљака, природне козметике, самониклог јестивог и зачинског биља, традиционална примена биљака за бојадисање вуне, тканина и одеће, затим коришћење дрвенатих врста за огрев, грађевински материјал и израду намештаја. Осим тога описана је и улога биљака у традиционалној култури и фолклору, ткању и везењу. Наведени су примери инспирације биљкама у народној књижевности. Дат је осврт на традиционалну примену биљака за верске прилике и магијске сврхе. Значај етноботанике је вишеструк, између осталог, она подстиче свест о вези биодиверзитета и културног диверзитета, као и разумевање међусобног утицаја биљака и људи. Савремена етноботаника је интердисциплинарна област, која окупља научнике из ботанике, антропологије, етнологије, археологије, географије, фармакологије, медицине, хемије, лингвистике, економије, пејзажне архитектуре, фармакологије и других области, а бави се широким спектром истраживачких питања, која су обрађена у рукопису. Захвалност: Монографија је реализована у оквиру Пројекта „Етно-фармаколошка студија региона југоисточне Србије” Српске Академије Наука и Уметности, као и у оквиру Уговора о релизацији и финансирању научноистраживачког рада научноистраживачких организација у 2024. години, који финансира Министарство за науку, технолошки развој и иновације Републике Србије (451-03-66/2024-03/200027).
