On the mountain of Maljen was described a relict polydominant plant community of initial type - Ostryo-Fagetwn montanum mixtum (calcicolum) prov. On steep slopes, among big calcareous rocks, the pedogenetic product was retained in lithogenic phase, influencing together with the local microclimatic conditions a relative preservation of this forest, as an alike part of the former montane tertiary vegetation in Western Serbia. It is very possible that the today's beech forests in Western Serbia have appeared in a recent time, parallel with soil evolution, from these relict pauperized forests (Aceri-Ostryo-Fagetum J o v., 1967; Ostryo-Fagetum V u k., 1964. etc.).
