In 1980. year, on 26 trees in a black pine plantation, in Lipovačka šuma near Belgrade, the vertical distribution of caterpillars of european pine shoot moth (Rhyacionia buoliana S chi ff.) was investigated. The attacked buds were collected and analyzed separately from the lower, middle and upper third of the crown. A total of 1.939 infected buds were collected. From this number 52,81 % belonged to the lower, 41,60% to the middle and only 6,03% to the upper part of the crown. A great deal of the attacked buds was empty i. e. without caterpillars. They were found in 325 buds, from which 271 (88 ,38%) were alive and 54 (16,62%) dead. From the total number of the alive caterpillars, the smallest number (5 i. e. 9,26%) was found in the upper part of the crown. This fact is of practical importance. It points out that for a successful protection of young pine trees only the treatment of the terminal shoots will satisfy.
