Opis (eng)

Abstract: In the past, the Moldova Noua area was famous for copper mining, and the mining activities have left their mark even today, by increasing the concentration of heavy metals in the surrounding areas. This study represents an analysis of physicochemical parameters (pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, and turbidity) and heavy metals concentration (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn). Samples were taken from three rivers, both upstream and downstream of certain localities. Groundwater samples were also collected from wells in the villages near the abandoned mine in Moldova Noua: Coronini, Macesti, Moldova Noua and Divici. All the values obtained from the analysis of the samples were reported to the maximum values allowed by the Romanian law, both for surface and groundwater samples. Thus, the pH and conductivity values were within normal parameters, without exceeding the normal range. For dissolved oxygen, the values obtained for surface water samples were between 5.47 - 17.3 mg/L, and for groundwater water samples between 5.62 - 14.87 mg/L. For the determination of turbidity values, the surface water samples had values above the permissible limits, while the groundwater samples were within normal values. The determination of heavy metal concentration revealed that the concentration of Fe ions had values between 385.1 - 1721.27 μg/L and the concentration of Hg ions had values higher than 0.5 μg/L for all samples analyzed. The samples for deep waters had values within the normal limits according to the Romanian law for drinking waters.
