Апстракт: Принц ватре, трећа по реду збирка приповедака Филипа Давида, објављена 1987. године, за узор ће имати, по речима аутора, домаће наслеђе фантастичке књижевности које чине Настасијевић и Ђалски, а потом хасидизам, дух Кабале и књижевности писане на јидишу. Писана у ониричком и фантастичком кључу, проза Филипа Давида представља праву ризницу нуминозних архетипских мотива и симбола. Као један од централних мотива збирке приповедака Принц ватре јавља се мотив ватре, који је од укупно једанаест приповедака, колико их броји ова збирка, присутан у осам. Ми смо се у овоме раду, пратећи мотив ватре и његова могућа значења, у тумачењу ослањали на методолошки оквир Јунгове аналитичке психологије и њену терминологију. Истраживањем ће се потврдити амбивалентна природа и значењско богатство симбола ватре:она је истовремено божанска и демонска, наговештај близине небесних сфера, једнако као и паклених; симбол је заштите, али и упозорење да се налазимо у близини деструктивних енергија. Осим тога, код Давида је она наговештај промене у ланцу гилгула (по кабалистичком предању, гилгул представља збир наших инкарнација, које се циклично измењују) или пак начин на који Велики Демијург брани посед врховне тајне од чо- векове радозналости.

Summary: Filip David, one of the representatives of the “quartet” of writers belonging to the literary and artistic scene of Yugoslavia from the second half of the 20th century (together with Danilo Kiš, Mirko Kovač and Borislav Pekić), contributed, even in his early works, such as short story collections Bunar u tamnoj šumi (The Well in the Dark Forst) (1964) and Zapisi o stvarnom i nestvarnom (Notes on the Real and the Unreal), to reviewing and breaking the prevailing canon in the Yugoslav literature of that period, by choosing new themes and new literary processes such as fantastic fiction. His third short story collection, Princ vatre (The Prince of Fire), published in 1987, was inspired, according to the author, by the national heritage of fantastic fiction, found in authors such as Nastasijević and Đalski, as well as by Hasidism, by the spirit of Kabbalah, and by literature created in the Yiddish language. Written in the oneiric and fantastic style, the prose by Filip David, in the author’s own words, is an attempt to “use one’s intuition to discover some of those hidden worlds”, making it abundant in numinous, archetypal motives and symbols. The motive of fire appears as one of the central motives in the short story collection of Princ vatre (The Prince of Fire), in fact, in as many as eight out of eleven short stories contained in the collection. In following the motive of fire and its potential meanings in this paper, we relied on the methodology framework of Jung’s analytical psychology and its terminology. The survey will confirm the ambivalent nature and a plethora of meanings associated with the numinous and powerful archetypal symbol of fire: it is divine and demonic at the same time, a suggestion of the closeness of heavenly spheres, as well as those of hell; it is a symbol of safeguard, as it drives away the forces of evil, but also an indication of danger of the unknown, yet forceful, which we cannot measure up to or contend with (here mainly referring to the unconscious aspects of psyche). Furthermore, fire, in David’s terms, is an element that pursues and suggests the process of transformation (both spiritual and physical), the so-called gilgul, representing the state of overall reincarnation, a continuous circulation of matter from the higher to the lower, and vice versa. Finally, fire may torch those who come close to discovering the secret of creation, as the ultimate secret of the Creator.
