Summary: The polygrapher Ivo Ćipiko (1869−1923) wrote short stories, prose poems, war reports, plays, and novels. As a volunteer in the Balkan Wars, he recorded the victories of the Serbian army against the Turks during the liberation of Kosovo and witnessed the retreat of the Serbian state and people through Albania, Greece and back through the Freedom Gate until the liberation of the homeland. In the most significant part of his story-telling and novelist’s oeuvre he, among other themes and motifs, primarily depicted the life of his native Dalmatia and common people. In the paper, we show how present the motif of fire is, which, as stated in the dictionary of Slavic mythology, is one of the basic elements of the universe (along with water, earth and air). Using a short story entitled ‘Vatra’ and a piece of memoir-documentary prose entitled ‘Plamičci’, we will show what the symbolism of fire and hearth means to ordinary people and heroes of the artistic world of Ivo Ćipikо. In both stylistic examples, we find almost all the theoretical and symbolic meanings of the term fire. Fire is an element of the world, fire is also an ingredient of feelings, fire is also air that ignites and extinguishes, as established by the Greek philosophers. We also show its significant magical effects, as well as symbolism, when uncle Radovan lights candles for his lost sons.

Апстракт: Полиграф Иво Ћипико (1869−1923) писао је приповетке, цртице, песме у прози, ратне репортаже, драме и романе. Kао добровољац у балканским ратовима забележио je победе српске војске против Турака приликом ослобађања Косова и сведочио о повлачењу српске државе и народа преко Албаније, Грчке и назад, преко Капије слободе, до ослобођења отаџбине. У најзначајнијем делу припoведачког и романсијерског опуса, између осталих тема и мотива, превасходно је одсликао живот родне Далмације и малог човека. Ј. Дучић је зато нашао да су три главна његова тематска и мотивска опредељења била „море, жена и гладовање“. У раду ћемо показати колико је присутан мотив ватре, која је један од основних елемената универзума (упоредо са водом, земљом и ваздухом). На примерима приповетке „Ватра“ и мемоарско-документарне прозе „Пламичци“ показаћемо шта симболика ватре и огњиштa значи малим људима и јунацима уметничког света Ива Ћипика.
