Summary: This paper sheds light on the number of victims during the demonstrations and attempted rebellion of Albanians in the province of Kosovo in April 1981. Over the last four decades this number has been the subject of numerous manipulations, mystifications, and abuses. There are various estimates of the number of victims in academic works on the Kosovo issue. Hundreds, if not thousands potential victims are usually cited, far exceeding the official figure of eight dead protesters and one policeman. The available sources allow us to identify all of the victims with high certainty and shed some light on the circumstances surrounding their deaths. Our conclusion is that official numbers were truthful – eight protesters and one policeman were murdered during the demonstrations in Priština, Uroševac and Vučitrn. One protester died in Mitrovica from drowning when he and his friends tried to swim over Sitnica while they was running away from the police. Official sources didn’t mention his death because he wasn’t killed during the clashes between protesters and the police.

Апстракт: У раду је на основу необјављених извора и публиковане архивске грађе и релевантне литературе расветљен број жртава током демонстрација и покушаја побуне Албанаца у покрајини Косово 1-3. априла 1981. године. Овај број је предмет бројних манипулација, мистификација и злоупотреба током претходне четири деценије. У периодици, публицистици али и академским књигама и радовима о косовском питању срећу се различите процене броја жртава. Често се говори о стотинама, па чак и о 1000 могућих жртава, што је вишеструко више од званичног броја од осам страдалих демонстраната и једног милицајца. Доступни извори омогућавају да се са великом сигурношћу идентификују све жртве и донекле расветле околности под којима су страдале.
