Analysis of Seepage Through an Embankment Dam Within the Framework of Hydropower System Resilience Assessment

The paper presents a numerical analysis of the influence of the partial loss of the water-retaining function of the embankment dam elements, such as the grout curtain and the clay core, on the seepage through the dam, as well as on the dam stability. The mentioned structural elements are divided into several regions, which enables the distributed management of the filtration coefficients of individual zones, i.e. simulation of possible damage to these elements. By increasing the filtration coefficient of a certain region, the flow of water through and under the dam body increases, depending on the damage region. This analysis was conducted at different water levels in the reservoir for each of the potentially damaged region and the total water flow through the dam body and through the grout curtain was measured. In addition to the filtration analysis in which the impact of damage on the increase in flow through the dam was considered, an analysis of the partial and global stability of the dam as a function of damage on these elements was also conducted. Partial stability was analyzed through the reduction of the remaining load-bearing capacity of individual dam regions, which was followed by the reduction of the stress point distance from the failure surface. The impact of damage on the global stability of the structure was analyzed through the analysis of the global factor of safety of the structure. The presented analysis was carried out as part of the assessment of the resilience of the hydropower system. The Zavoj dam, which is a part of the Pirot hydropower system in the Republic of Serbia, was used as a case of study.
