Summary: The paper starts from the theoretical definition of myth and legend and highlights their place and function in the structure of the „Book for Mark“ as a contribution to the interpretation and understanding of the divine and human in the process of innovating children's literature. Svetlana Velmar Jankovic, through seven stories, whose heroes are Stefan Nemanja, Saint Sava, Stefan Decanski, Tsar Dusan, Despot Stefan Lazarevic, Prince Lazar and Marko Kraljevic, tells stories about unusual events of a boy who will become the most important figures in Serbian history and culture. It is obvious that through their characters, connecting the myth into a knot, in a didactically hidden way, the narrator connects history and reality and myth and legend, that is, he educates and bases the education of young people on culture. The stories are set in the Middle Ages, which in itself seems mystical and enigmatic, and the motif of the supernatural runs through everything. They end with credible historical facts about the heroes themselves and their lives. In addition to mythical and legendary elements, the stories also contain elements of oral tradition mixed with history. The „Book for Mark“ is undoubtedly attractive to children because it uses historical facts appropriate to children's psychology and upbringing about education through the form of a fairy tale. Although lifestyles changed from epoch to epoch, the essence remained the same: man had a primordial and anthropological need for storytelling and play.In need of a story, connecting elements of myth, fairy tales and legends, she shapes the complex structure of the „Book for Mark“ and incorporates personal happiness and creative energy into it.
