Opis (srp)

Opis (eng)

Summary: Within the opus of Dževad Karahasan, Sarajevo is much more than a mere toponym: the city actively participates in the plot, defines the characters’ identities, and plays a role in their fates. The author uses their relationships with the city to define his characters more deeply, delving into the issue of identity and its dependence on culture. Being that Karahasan sees Sarajevo as the paradigm of interculturality and polyglossy, the city appears both as the living testimony of the novel’s content, and an embodiment of the structure of Karahasan’s prose. Not only is the poetics of the culturally multilayered and polyglossic Sarajevo written in the novel, but the city’s poetics gets tightly interwoven with the poetics of his other novels. In the world of Karahasan’s novel, being material and architectural, Sarajevo stands for the visible in opposition to the abstract. At the same time, for this author, Sarajevo is a city that integrates differences instead of annulling them, and thus it’s a place of authentic life, a different place, a heterotopia standing against the world of an „ever more complete uniformity”. The author explicates his own poetics in his essayistic reflections about the city, while the representation of Sarajevo stands in close connection to key poetic elements of Karahasan’s prose. We demonstrated this using the novel, which thematizes the siege of Sarajevo, as an example, as well as the essayistic literature that’s focused on the „city’s platonic being”.
