Апстракт: У настојању да Андрићеву приповетку „Књига“ сагледа онако како ју је приповедач одредио већ у првој реченици – као „историју једног дугог и великог страха“ – али и да то одређење преиспита, аутор рада анализира зачетак, развој и „окончање“ патолошког страха у души тринаестогодишњег дечака, налазећи његове узроке у мањој мери у индивидуалним склоностима јунака, а у већој у друштвено-историјском и културолошком контексту (васпитању, социјалном и материјалном положају његове породице, моралним нормама средине и историјском тренутку, односно хронотопу у ком се радња одвија) и сплету околности који су у том осетљивом дечачком узрасту довели до опсесивног поремећаја. Реч „окончање“ овде је употребљена условно, јер и кад се неминовно окончао немили догађај с књигом што је произвео неизрециву патњу овог „малог човека“, његов страх метастазирао је у страх од страха, који нам приповедач емпатички преноси. Андрићево мајсторско приказивање и психолошко нијансирање феномена (не)реалног страха упоређено је са искуствима и описима ових поремећаја које доноси савремена психологија. Приповетка је посматрана и у контексту збирке Деца, где је страх једна од доминантних тема, те је направљена паралела са осветљавањем овог феномена и у другим Андрићевим приповеткама о деци.

Summary: In an attempt to view Andrić’s short story “The Book” in the way the storyteller detremined in the very first sentence – as “a history of a a long and big fear” – but also to question that determination, the author of the work anlyses the beginning, development and “ending” of a pathological fear in the soul of a 13-year-old boy, discovering its causes to a lesser extent in individual inclinations of the hero, and to a greater extent in socialhistorical and culturological context (upbringing, social and material status of his family, moral norms of the environment and historical moment, that is, the chronothope in which the strory happens) and a set of circumstances which brought about an obsessive disorder at such a sensitive boy’s age. The word “ending” is used here conditionally, since when the unfortuante event with the book inevitably came to an end, which caused unspeakable suffering of “this little man”, his fear turned into the fear of fear, which the storyteller empathically conveys to us. Andrić’s masterful representation and psycholocigal shading of the phenomenon of (un)real fear is compared to the experiences and descriptions of these disorders in contemporary psycholgy, therefore, it has been concluded that what is represented in the story is not only history but also pathology of a great fear. The short story is viewed in the context of the collection Children, where fear is one of the dominant topics, and a parallel has been made when it comes to shedding light on this phenomenon also in other Andrić’s short stories about children.
