In this paper, we analyze the short story Love in the kasaba (1923), which was published in Andric’s first collection of short stories in 1924 and is one of the early works of the master of storytelling. The story is closely related to the doctoral dissertation, which Andric defended in the same year, in Graz. It is obvious that the research of the history of Bosnia conducted during the work on the doctoral dissertation helped Andric to look at the history of the Turkish rule and, later, the time of the Austro-Hungarians and their annexations in a complex way and turn it into a story. So, when we talk about the scientific and artistic image of Andric's Bosnia, which he considered a personal phenomenon, we are always talking about a multicultural space where transcultural and transnational communications of different cultural and religious patterns are constantly taking place. Rifka’s tragic fate arose from that forbidden communication with Ledenik. With this paper, we show by what means the narrator gives signs of distinguishing Rifka in relation to environment to which she belongs and from which she originates. The town and the love in it are set up as two opposing worlds, two universes.

Приповетка Љубав у касаби (1923) актуализује архетипско андрићевско проблемско питање - мотив неприпадања колективу. To питање се манифестује кроз верско, интелектуално, еротско и егзистенцијално разликовање од средине. Девојка ванредне лепоте, Рифка, припада јеврејском народу који поседује строге обрасце културе. По том моделу заљубљивање у припадника друге вере представља тежак прекршај правила. Чинећи преступ и остварујући љубав са Ледеником, хрватским (аустријским) поручником, она улази у инцидентно поље које носи тешке последице. Овим радом показујемо како приповедач слика разликовања Рифке у односу на средину којој припада и из које потиче и како се манифестације понашања Рифкиног изабраника, који по свом идејном и психолошком склопу и усвојеном моделу културе не припада средини у којој обавља службу? У том смислу касаба и љубав у њој постављају се као два света и два универзума у непрестаном сукобу.
