FIRST RESULTS IN PRODUCTION OF WHITE MULBERRY SEEDLINGS, AS THE BASIS FOR SILK INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENT

Reanimation of silk industry has revealed a new interest for growing white
mulberry (Morus alba L.) trees, which leaves serve for feeding silkworms (Bombus
mori).
The existing genofond of white mulberry was examined in southern Banat
- region of Vršac. Selection of mother trees was made and material for
vegetative and generative reproduction was taken. The seedlings of this provenance
at the and of the first year of growth, which were produced in Dunemann-beds
in the Institute's nursery, have reached the height between 16.0 and 63.0 cm, the
medium value being 39.5 cm. In that way a total of 400.000 seedlings was produced.
Generative reproduction of white mulberry and its hybrids introduced from
the USSR was also made in hard plastic containers of ,,Plantagrah" type. A total
of 3.500 seedlings was obtained from three japanese hybrids (Kurimelto It, N2,
Murasaki-Vase I1, N, and Ošima I1, N2) and one russian hybrid (Taskent-SANIŠ 15),
including also the domestic provenance (Vršac).
The produced plants will be exposed to further observations and measurements,
in order to select the most perspective clones and to create new hybrids
which should be used as planting stock in establishing seed orchards and plantations
for silkworm growing.
